Video Endoscopy

An image from an endoscopic exam.

The Equine Center has an extensive range of video endoscopes, with sizes suitable for the smallest foal and the largest horse.

These allow direct visualization of a range of internal structures including the upper airways and larynx, the trachea and bronchi, the stomach and proximal small intestine, the uterus, bladder and urethra. In most cases these examinations can be performed while the horse is standing.

Abnormalities can be identified and, when necessary, samples collected for further analysis. Poor performance, ulcers and reproductive issues are all indications for video endoscopy.

CONDITIONS THAT CAN BE EVALUATED WITH AN ENDOSCOPE

Horses can be checked for both airway issues via endoscopy and stomach issues with gastroscopy.

  • Performance limiting conditions
  • Nasal discharge
  • Nose bleeds
  • Coughing
  • Sinus infection
  • Upper airway obstruction- whistling or roaring during work
  • Soft palate displacement
  • Gastric ulcers which can cause discomfort and poor performance
  • Guttural pouch disease/infection

Endoscopy is the current diagnostic method of choice for evaluating the equine upper airway, stomach and a variety of poor performance issues. It is also very useful diagnosing reproductive and urogenital problems. Endoscopy is a very safe and quick procedure that could provide invaluable information about your horse’s condition.

A definitive diagnosis obtained via endoscopy can save you money and get your horse on an effective treatment plan.  This minimally invasive technology can be a crucial step towards getting your horse healthy and performing at his/her best.
